Dental Bridges Q & A

What’s a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a prosthetic device designed to permanently replace one or more teeth that are missing from your smile. It’s made up of prosthetic teeth that are attached to a dental crown on one or both sides. The crowns and prosthetics literally “bridge” the missing space between your teeth.

Dental bridges are made from a wide range of materials, including:

  • Zirconia
  • Porcelain
  • Ceramic
  • Gold
  • Metal alloys

These different materials are all designed to cater to your unique needs, preferences, and budget.

Why should I get a dental bridge?

Missing teeth can affect more than just the appearance of your smile. Missing teeth can also lead to:

  • Misalignment as natural teeth shift to fill in the empty space
  • Jaw problems
  • Deformation of your face as the muscles and surrounding tissues cave in
  • Difficulty speaking and chewing properly
  • Bone loss in your jaw

Your mouth is ultimately designed to have all of its teeth working together in harmony. A dental bridge restores that natural balance, improving the function and health of your smile.

What’s the process for getting a bridge?

Dr. Chirla can fit you with a high-quality dental bridge in two office visits.

During your first appointment, Dr. Chirla applies a local anesthetic to the area in your mouth where the bridge will be installed. Unless you’re placing your bridge on dental implants, he shaves down the enamel on the teeth next to your missing tooth in order to make room for the crowns that support the bridge.

Once your abutment teeth are prepared, he takes an impression of your smile and sends it off to a lab. There, your bridge will be created to fit seamlessly and comfortably in your mouth. In the meantime, Dr. Chirla sends you home with a temporary bridge while you wait for the lab to finish making your permanent restoration.

When your permanent bridge is ready, you’ll come back to the office for a second appointment. Dr. Chirla removes your temporary bridge, cleans your mouth, and places your permanent one. He checks to ensure that it fits properly, and then permanently seals it with a bonding solution, giving you a strong and beautiful new smile.

Don’t wait to get the full, functional, and radiant smile that you deserve. Get started with your dental bridge today by scheduling an appointment with Danny Chirla, DDS. You can call the office or book your visit online.
